Chapter 25

An hour later as Gill watched Lillico drive away bearing his precious cargo, he pulled out his phone and took a deep breath. This call was important, and it was long overdue.

‘Rani,’ said Gill as the number picked up. ‘Gill McArdle here. Been a long time.’

‘Gill,’ gasped Rani Kumar’s voice. ‘So good to hear from you.’

‘How are you?’

‘I’m great. Better than great.’

‘Wee bird tells me you’re married.’

‘I am, to someone I met professionally. A chap called Graham McGregor.’

‘Didn’t he help you set up the horse sanctuary?’

‘He did. And better yet, he has a young daughter who needed a new mum.’

‘Goodness. What’s the story there?’

‘Graham lost his first wife to breast cancer. Amy was just three when her mum died.’

‘That’s tragic.’

‘It is. By all accounts, Amy’s mum was a wonderful woman. But now I’m here for them both and they’re here for me,’ said Rani, her voice radiating happiness.

‘What a whirlwind,’ said Gill. ‘I’m so pleased for you.’

‘And how about you? What’s been happening?’

Over the next few minutes, Gill updated her on his marriage to Salina, the arrival of their first child and briefly, how things were progressing on the magazine. Then he drew a breath and got down to business. ‘Listen, I’m up on the Isle of Lewis this week on a personal errand. I’m wondering if I could pop in and say hi?’

‘Absolutely. And it’ll give you a chance to meet our boy. You remember MG1914?’

‘I do,’ said Gill. ‘I take it he’s still around?’

‘All grown up and in his prime. He’s a fine animal. I’m so glad he survived Minos Genetics.’

‘Me too. Hey, I’ll be in touch in the morning and check what time you’re available.’
